When you’re designing a pool, there are many different factors to consider. These include not only elements of the pool itself, but also the surrounding area. Your pool deck is not necessarily the most extravagant part of your backyard, but it serves an important purpose and should complement your pool. At Pools By Design, we pay close attention to every aspect of your custom pool, including the deck design.
The pool deck, sometimes called a pool patio, is the area directly surrounding your pool. This is different from the pool coping, which is the pool’s immediate border. The deck is where you can put your outdoor furniture and you can also add features such as a fire pit, barbeque grill, or even a full outdoor kitchen.
The ideal size for your pool deck depends on a variety of factors. First and foremost, you will need to make sure you have enough space. Your pool’s size will influence how much room is left for the deck and you should account for any landscaping that you would like to include. You will also need to make sure you can accommodate any features and seating. Similar to when you are choosing how large to make the pool itself, you should consider the number of people you expect to use your pool when designing the deck. In many cases, more people will be poolside than in the pool itself during large gatherings, so you should keep this in mind if you frequently host parties.
Some possible deck materials include:
Poured concrete is the most popular choice for pool decks. This material is incredibly versatile and can be adapted to fit nearly any design. The surface can be textured to make it more slip-resistant or you can choose a smooth pour instead.
Pavers are an alternative to poured concrete and allow you to create beautiful patterns for your deck. They have similar benefits to poured concrete, so which you should choose depends mostly on your aesthetic preferences.
Travertine is an excellent choice to take your pool deck to the next level. The surface naturally absorbs water, which helps make it more slip-resistant. It is also cool to the touch, which can be a great benefit during hot Arizona summers.
In addition to these more common choices, there are other material options available depending on your preferences. We are happy to discuss these with you to determine what would be the best for your needs.
