Your pool water level should be at the midpoint of your pool skimmer’s opening. This allows the skimmer to pull debris from your pool’s surface effectively. Too much or too little water can lead to costly repairs.
Here is what you should know about water levels and how to make your maintenance easier:
Your water level may rise due to very heavy rain or if you overfilled your pool. If this is the case, floating debris will not be able to get into the skimmer. This can lead to dirty water. Your filtration system will also be less efficient. In general, a high pool water level is a much less common and less serious issue than a low level.
You can usually wait for the water level to drop naturally, which happens fairly quickly due to splashing while you swim and evaporation. If you need to speed up the process, you can attach a pool hose to your filter, lead the hose to an open area, and set the filter to “drain.”
Since using your pool and natural evaporation lead to less water over time, a low water level is a common problem. It can cause a great deal of damage because your filter system may suck in air. If the level is low for too long, you may even need to replace your pool pump, its motor, or other parts.
During the swimming season, you should check your water level daily. If you notice it dropping below the midpoint of the skimmer, turn off your pool filter and add some water with a hose. If there are issues with the water level even when you aren’t using the pool, you should also check the filtration system for leaks.
